Did you know that Cancun is an island?
At the beginning of its history, this beautiful tourist center was a strip of white sand and palm trees in the northern part of Quintana Roo.
It is linked to the continental zone through two bridges that were installed four decades ago. It began as a sun and beach destination with just a few hotel rooms and today it has become one of the most visited in the world. It is the first and most important Hotel Zone, where most of the beaches and tourist activities are concentrated, and small bars where you can enjoy the nightlife. Shopping and cultural proposals are the sum of a key tourist center in the State of Quintana Roo, today known as the Mexican Caribbean.
There are two versions of the origin of the name, depending on the Mayan pronunciation: the first version is “snake nest or pot.” The second refers to the Golden Snake, this is because the island of Cancun is shaped like a 7 and, at dawn, it appears to be the shape of a golden snake due to the reflection of the sun.
During the month of February, the region's carnival season begins. Mérida, Campeche, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and Cancún are filled with color in a party full of musical, cultural, craft and gastronomic events. In Cancun, various sectors of society, in coordination with the local city council, participate with the presentation of colorful caravans that travel through the main avenues of the city and in the contest to select the ugly queen and king of the carnival.
