Are you getting ready to visit Cancun? You probably already have a flight, accommodation, itinerary and budget ready to make the most of the beaches, cenotes and all the natural wonders that await you in this important tourist destination in Mexico. But before your trip, you must take into account a very important payment that will benefit the community. Have you heard of the Environmental Sanitation Right? If you don't know what it is, keep reading because we will tell you everything you need to know!
The Environmental Sanitation Right is a charge to the user or users of lodging services in Quintana Roo regardless of the means or platform through which it is contracted or acquired. It was implemented in Cancun since 2019 and is supported by the Treasury Law of the Municipality of Benito Juárez of the State of Quintana Roo, which dictates that providers of lodging services (Hotels, hostels, houses, apartments, private or shared rooms, among others) will be responsible for collecting it at the time of check in or check out. That is to say, when charging for lodging, you must additionally pay the Environmental Sanitation Fee, which is calculated by a percentage established by law and applies per night per room.
The objective of this charge is to improve the infrastructure and security of the city, keep our beaches free of sargassum and trash, and promote the sustainability of our destination through a trust jointly managed by civil associations and the municipal government.
Now that you know what it is about and why it was implemented, don't be surprised by the Environmental Sanitation Fee charge when staying in Quintana Roo! Remember that it applies when purchasing lodging through any means or platform, including digital ones, and that it will represent a medium and long-term benefit for all those who visit or live in our State.
